Monday Pals: Film 101 Workshop Recap

 

Step into the world where light becomes the brushstroke, and the studio is the canvas. New Wave Studio in Portland, Oregon, recently played host to an illuminating workshop, where a group of twelve passionate photographers gathered to unravel the secrets of seamlessly integrating studio lighting with the captivating world of film photography. This fun and educational experience was led by none other than the ever talented and passionate local photographer, Meaghan Sutton.

Meaghan Sutton, a local photography luminary is renowned for her expertise in film photography. Meaghan's portfolio spoke volumes about her mastery, making her the perfect guide for those looking to add a touch of brilliance to their film photography through the strategic use of studio lighting.

The workshop commenced with a an introduction of all attendees, as well as the hosts,before breaking out into groups to practice with different types of lights on the cyc wall and the backdrop wall, as well as a pop up set on a the rolling backdrop in another corner of the studio.

Meaghan took a group of the newer-to-film photographers off to the side, and taught them the fundamentals on loading a roll of film, and what to look for when getting started.

What set this workshop apart is the hands-on experience it offered. Attendees had the opportunity to experiment with a variety of studio lighting setups, guided by Meaghan's expertise as well as that of New Wave Studio’s staff. From a basic 1 light strobe setup, for a clean, bright look to a multi-colored continuous lighting setup, adding an endless level of creativity and fun to the mix.

Meaghan addressed the unique challenges posed by the marriage of studio lighting and film photography. From managing exposure to achieving the right balance, attendees learned valuable tips and tricks to navigate potential hurdles, ensuring their images translated their artistic vision seamlessly.

Participants were encouraged to explore the interplay between light and film, capturing moments that showcased the magic achievable through studio lighting. Meaghan provided individualized guidance, ensuring each attendee could bring their unique vision to life under the studio lights.

The workshop concluded with a palpable excitement for the images the attendees were going to receive once their film was processed and scanned/printed. We at New Wave Studio are excited and eager to showcase the participants' best studio-lit film photographs. From soft, ethereal portraits to bold, dynamic compositions, each image will reflect the newfound proficiency and creative expression of the photographers, shedding light on their evolving skills.
